Mother

Mother- Moth-er
Function:  Noun
1) A female person who is pregnant with or gives birth to a child.
2) A female person whose egg unites with a sperm, resulting in the conception of a child.
3)  A woman who adopts a child.
4) A woman who raises a child.
5) A female parent of an animal.
6) A female ancestor.
7) A woman who holds a position of authority or responsibility similar to that of a mother

As you can see from above, the word “mother” can represent so many ideas in culture and life and mean so many different things. There are a few certainties in life: death, taxes, and the fact that we all have a mother. The relationship one has with their mother can be positive, negative, or even non-existent. Either way this connection however great or imperfect will fabricate our lives insurmountably.

Every mother lays out a mental blueprint for their child’s life before they are even born. Yet, to me it takes a great architect to be able to allow this blueprint to become what it needs to be and allow it to grow and mold itself along the way. No plan ever comes to fruition without many revisions and detours. As always there are opportunities that present themselves that are never on the plan but that always manage to appear once you are on the “jobsite of life”. How we deal with these opportunities can show and teach us many things about ourselves and how we view the world.

My Mama has shown me how to be a great architect of life for my children. To me she is the symbol of leading by example by allowing me to be free thinking and never to hold me within the constraints of what she thinks my plan needs to look like. Inevitably things on paper look different in the real world. Whether they are spectacular achievements in the design of life or horrible miscalculated failures, Mama is always behind me congratulating or consoling me.

My mama is wonderful, fantastic, amazing, magnificent, superb, brilliant, well, there just is not a single word that can describe how great she is and do her justice. She has given me so many of the tools with which I used to design and construct my life that I lead today. I am thankful everyday that my Mama let me design and create my own life and gave me the encouragement to become who I am today.

Thanks Mama! I love you.

Loch

Written by:  Emily Sapanza

Loch
Function: Noun
Etymology: Middle English (Scots) louch, from Scottish Gaelic loch; akin to Latin lacus lake
Date: 14th century
1) lake
2)  a bay or arm of the sea especially when nearly landlocked

One of my favorite television series Monarch of the Glen is actually filmed on location at Loch Laggan in Lochaber, Highland, Scotland. Inspired by the highland novels of Compton Mackenzie, Monarch of the Glen follows Archie MacDonald as he finds himself thrown into the role of the new Laird of Glenbogle, his family's financially failing Scottish estate. With the help, and sometimes hinderance, of his family and faithful retainers he works to get the noble estate back on its feet.

The Ardverikie Estate is portrayed in the series as The Glen Bogle Estate and borders the Loch. Ardverikie, designed and built in the Scottish baronial style in 1870, is one of the finest private houses in the Scottish highlands. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert even stayed here for a whole month before she bought Balmoral.

Zip line

zip line
Function: noun
Date: 1984
1)  a cable suspended above an incline to which a pulley and harness are attached for a rider

Once upon a time taking a vacation always meant relaxing by the seashore and lazily imbibing yourself until you couldn’t take it anymore. This scenario still (thankfully) applies, however, many people are now planning their vacations around exciting excursions and adventure activities. One of these vacation phenomena is the zip line. Where as, before, zooming through the rain forest upper canopy at a heartstopping speed seemed unfathomable, now this is a perfunctory part of most people’s visits to exotic locations. What a fantastic way to see the upper tier of an ecosystem! However, if you can’t get away to an exotic location there are companies that will design and build a zipline. There are also home kits that can help you create a zipline in your own backyard.

Flannel- Flan·nel
Function:  Noun
1) a soft, lightweight, loosely woven woolen cloth with a slightly napped surface

Flannel can be seen in many incarnations not the least of which is the men’s gray flannel suit. The favorites of mine however, are the Michael Kors Harness Flannel Satchel and the Yves Saint Laurent Tribute Flannel Sandals.

Capacious

Capacious- ca·pa·cious
Function: adjective
1) able to contain or hold much; roomy; spacious

http://www.homedesignfind.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/tumidei-tiramollaloftbedrooms-1.jpg

For me the greatest feeling of accomplishment comes from molding a small dysfunctional space into one that is highly efficient and well-designed. In other words taking a cramped area and producing a "capacious" one through ingenuity and smart design.

I first fell in love with the notion of space planning for small spaces during college when I was roped into purchasing lofts with my roommate because she had a crush on the young man who was peddling them around campus. I was really annoyed at first with the idea of having to rearrange my entire dorm room so my roommate could ogle this guy as he built our lofts. However, after he finished my roommate had a date and I had a newfound obsession. I was so pleased with my ability to reorganize my living, working, social, and private spaces into roughly 100 square feet, and more over for my life to seem more streamlined after the begrudged room transition than before. I was heading towards choosing a degree in English Literature in my sophomore and had no idea that this capricious purchase of some bolts, 2x4s, and plywood would spark my interest in a field of study I never knew I had. These days with dwindling space in urban developments people are more and more turning to generating the most return out of the square footage they have. The Scandinavian design giant IKEA is great at taking a limited amount of square footage and molding it into a productive environment to live in.

Below are several great examples of small yet capacious spaces:

Sub Rosa

October 26, 2009

Written by: Emily Sapanza

Sub Rosa
Function: Adverb
1) Secretly; privately; confidentially.
Function: Adjective
1) Designed to be secret or confidential; secretive; private.

The first thing that comes to mind for me when I hear the term "sub rosa" is, of course, The Da Vinci Code the ubiquitous novel by Dan Brown. In his novel the meaning behind the term was explained. The actual definition of the term means to work in secret. This is a great term for design because many people who are innovators of design guard their ideas with the utmost security. This effectuates the need to have elaborate unveiling ceremonies thus creating suspense around the design ideas. Sometimes this may be a marketing strategy but more often than not creative minds want to protect their individual creativity and receive credit for their ideas. The Coca-Cola formula is a wonderful example of this strategy. Lawsuits have been brought by the company against people intending to sell the secret formula for personal gain

Below are some images that reflect this practice:

Pachydermatous - Pack-ih-DER-muh-tuss
Function: Adjective
1. Of, relating to, or characteristic of a pachyderm.
2. Thick-skinned; insensitive.

To produce a "PETA-approved" pachydermatous faux finish one should incorporate the paper ‘plique technique as seen here on this ceiling.
